Resources for Writing About Scotland and the Scottish....

eBook Crossroads
The recorded history of Scotland began with the arrival of the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD. The Romans added southern Britain to their empire as the province Britannia. However, they were unable to subdue the fierce tribes in the north. To keep these tribes from invading Britannia, Emperor Hadrian had a massive wall. Parts of Hadrian's Wall still stand on the Scottish border.

The Kingdom emerged as an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707, although it had been in a personal union with the kingdoms of England and Ireland since James VI succeeded to the English and Irish thrones in 1603. On 1 May 1707, Scotland entered into an incorporating political union with England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain.
