Procrastination. Now this is something I am very good at! I have learned though, that everyone procrastinates. Putting things off is simply part of being human. However, if you do it consistently, there is probably something else in progress.

Let's take a look at why we may be putting certain tasks off time after time...

You may be surprised to learn that procrastinators tend to be perfectionists. You may not be surprised to learn that fear is the major motivation of procrastination.

So there you have it! You are afraid to finish that book, launch that product, write that sales letter, etc. because it might not be good enough for you - worse yet, it might fail all together.

Wow, what egotistical fools we must be!

I don't know about you, but I have never contemplated not finishing a project because I was afraid it wouldn't be good enough. .

I always have valid reasons for not completing projects - I am a very busy person afterall, and there are just not enough hours in the day - And sometimes other things pop up that have to be taken care of first...

Well ok, these really do sound like excuses, don't they?

If you think there's no hope for us, take heart! No one is beyond help. This is a habit that has a specific origin and it's a habit that can be overcome.

Here are a few things you can do to start breaking your habit:

  • Be realistic about how long your project will take
  • Make yourself accountable. Set a deadline - and stick to it
  • Make a plan or outline so the task is broken up into small chunks and in order of how each should be done.
  • Don't be negative. Think the good thoughts. You'll be an author, you'll make lots of money, etc.
  • Get help. Ask a friend to help keep you on track. Join a writing group. Whatever it takes.
  • I hope these ideas help you out with kicking your procrastination habit. And if you're really serious about getting the recognition and income you deserve by completing projects, I found a great book that is helping me break my habit!

This is a real kick-in-the-pants book that is getting me off my duff and pushing me along to get my projects done. It breaks everything down into step-by-step chunks that are easy to implement.

So come along with me and kick your procrastination habit!
