What are PDAs Anyway?
The PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), is a handheld device that combines computer, telephone/fax,
Internet, organization and networking features. A PDA can function as a cellular phone,
eBook reader, fax sender, Web browser and personal organizer. PDAs are available in either
a stylus or keyboard version. Because some PDAs are pen-based and use a stylus for input rather
than a keyboard, handwriting recognition is often incorporated into their features. Some can
also react to voice recognition.
Apple Computer was one of the first companies to offer PDAs. In 1993 Apple introduced the
MessagePad and shortly thereafter other companies began offering similar products. Today's
PDAs have many more features and are far more advanced than those of the early ninety's. Below
are some of the more popular offerings.
