Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful
ways to earn money online. As with other kinds of businesses, a
great deal of the profits in affiliate marketing depend on the
affiliate’s promoting strategies.
Compared to traditional promotional practices, affiliate
programs are more effective, risk-free and cost efficient. Many
programs lay out strategies for you and provide copy and graphics
for you to use. So why do so many people still fail at affiliate
marketing?
Let’s take a look at the most common affiliate marketing mistakes...
Affiliate Marketing Mistake #1:
Choosing the wrong affiliate program
Choosing the wrong products to offer on your website can bring
a quick death knell to your affiliate marketing.
It’s very important to choose products that are compatible
with your niche, products that will appeal to your customer’s,
products that solve problems or that will enhance your customers
needs. Choosing "in demand" products that are not suitable for
your customers will do you absolutely no good.
It's equally important to find products that appeal to you.
If you aren’t thrilled with a product, what makes you think your
customers will be? It’s also much easier to promote a product
that you are passionate about than promoting one simply for the
sake of money.
Affiliate Marketing Mistake #2:
Joining too many affiliate programs
Since affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might be
tempted to join multiples of affiliate programs to maximize
earnings.
Keep in mind that there is a big difference between having
multiple sources of income and being inundated with products that
you simply do not have the time or resources to promote.
Simply "having" a product available will not bring you
profits. Affiliate products have to be promoted in order to be
profitable, and attempting to promote too many products at the
same time will keep you from realizing the potential of any of
them.
For best results, choose one product at a time and promote it
vigorously. When your making a reasonable profit on your product
you should then consider and choose another product and do the
same.
Using this technique you will be able to realize each product’s
profit potential and not bury yourself in seemingly
useless effort.
Affiliate Marketing Mistake #3:
Promoting only one product
By the same token, putting all your eggs into one basket will
unnecessarily limit your profit potential as well.
There is a real need for multiple sources of income. Customers
want options, they want to be able to choose for themselves what
is best for their needs - and keeping your customers happy
affects your bottom line.
Online marketing can also be a very fickle commodity.
Something that was a hot seller today may not be in demand
tomorrow. It’s always best to avoid this problem by having
other products to fall back on.
There is a happy medium. You need enough products to suit your
customer base and not too many to reduce your marketing efforts
and resources for each product.
Affiliate Marketing Mistake #4:
Not buying the product or using the service
As a business owner your main purpose is to earn profits. As
an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and
convincingly promote a product or service.
If you do not "know" the product your trying to promote you
are going to shortchange yourself, your affiliate merchant and
your customers.
It's very difficult to be passionate about a product that you
have only read about. How convincing can you be? How do you know
the product solves certain problems - just because the merchant
says so? How can you answer questions about exactly how a product
reacts to a specific situation? You can’t. And that makes your
promotion unconvincing.
Try the product or service personally first before you sign up
as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it
promises. If you have done so, then you are one of the credible
and living testaments aware of its advantages and disadvantages.
Your customers will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in
you and this will trigger them to try them out for themselves.
Affiliate Marketing Mistake #5:
Not having a content-rich website
It takes on average seven visits from a potential customer
before they purchase from you.If your website cannot attract
traffic and keep them coming back you will not make sales.
Without traffic you can’t build your mailing list either.
A search-engine optimized website is your best asset, and the
search engines love quality content - and so do your visitors!
Make your website easy to navigate and provide your visitors
with the content they are searching for. Also make sure your site
is optimized with relevant keywords to make the search engines
happy.
One of the best ways to achieve a great affiliate website is
with a Site Build It! website. Site Build It! not only hosts your
site and shows you how to build it, it does all the technical
stuff for you. SBI was designed to be used with affiliate
programs. The "Action Plan" shows you how to build your site and
your affiliate business on a day-by-day basis. You can check it
out here:
Site Build It!.
If you haven’t begun yet, make sure to avoid these common
mistakes. If you're already using affiliate programs
and have committed one or more of these affiliate marketing
mistakes, they can be easily fixed.
Most importantly, keep on trying. Continue to improve your
knowledge of affiliate marketing including, advertising, web page
development, basic business, and search engine optimization
techniques. You’ll also want to study the needs and wants of your
site users and find the best products to serve them.
To your success!
